Every card on Pulls has one of seven conditions. Each condition allows a number of flaws, and bigger flaws count more. Sellers use these rules when they list a card, and Pulls uses them when a buyer says a card isn’t as described.

1How flaws count

Every flaw has a size. Add up what you find. The total, the largest flaw and the kind of flaw decide the condition.

The full text of this part

The sizes count small 1, medium 2, large 4, very large 8.

  • White speck (small, 1): A white dot on an edge or corner, up to 2 mm.
  • Edge whitening (medium, 2): A white line along an edge, up to 2 cm: a third of the short side.
  • Long whitening (large, 4): Whitening along an edge up to 8 cm, about the long side. Longer is very large.
  • Soft corner (medium, 2): A corner that has gone white or slightly soft.
  • Rounded corner (large, 4): A corner that is rounded off or frayed.
  • Hairline scratch (small, 1): A thin line up to 2 cm that only shows when you tilt the card.
  • Scratch (medium, 2): A scratch you see without tilting, up to 4 cm. Longer is large, a deep one very large.
  • Haze (small, 1): A dull, cloudy patch on the holo or gloss, up to 5 × 5 mm, only visible when tilted. Up to half a side is medium, a whole side large, both sides very large.
  • White spot (medium, 2): Bare card showing on the face, the size of a pinhead. Up to 3 × 3 mm is large, up to 6 × 6 mm very large.
  • Pinprick dent (small, 1): A dent the size of a pinprick.
  • Dent (large, 4): A dent that shows on the back. Up to 2 × 2 mm without showing on the back is medium.
  • Dirt (medium, 2): A small smudge or mark from handling. Several are large.
  • Bend (large, 4): The card doesn't lie flat: a bend up to 1 cm, without a crease line.
  • Crease (very large, 8): A sharp line where the card was folded, or a bend up to 2 cm.

2The seven conditions

MTMintMint

Looks untouched, even under a lamp.

No flaws at all. Only factory traits you have to hunt for: a faint print line, centring of 60/40 or better.

For example
A card sleeved straight from the pack, and checked: pack-fresh isn't Mint by default.
Never
Any speck, scratch, haze or dent.

NMNear mintNear Mint

Looks unplayed; a lamp shows at most 3 tiny flaws.

Up to 3 small flaws, front and back together: white specks up to 2 mm, hairline scratches you only see when tilting, a small hazy patch, a pinprick dent.

For example
Two white specks on the back and one hairline scratch on the holo.
Never
A white line along an edge, a soft corner, a white spot on the face, a scratch you see straight on, dirt, any bend.

EXExcellentExcellent

Light edge wear and a scratch or two; no bends.

Flaws adding up to 6, none of them large. A small flaw counts 1, a medium one 2: a white line up to 2 cm, a soft corner, a scratch you see straight on, a white spot the size of a pinhead.

For example
A white line on one edge, a scratch you see straight on and two specks: 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6.
Never
Large flaws, dents bigger than a pinprick, dirt, any bend.

GDGoodGood

Worn all round, like a card played without sleeves; no bends.

Flaws adding up to 9, large ones included: long whitening, rounded corners, haze across a side, white spots up to 3 × 3 mm, dents, some dirt.

For example
Long whitening on the back, two soft corners and a speck: 4 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 9.
Never
Any bend or crease, water marks, any very large flaw.

LPLight playedLight Played

Heavy wear and maybe a light bend; no crease.

Flaws adding up to 12, including a light bend up to 1 cm without a crease.

For example
Long whitening, haze across one side and a light bend: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
Never
Any very large flaw: a crease, a deep scratch, whitening over 8 cm, haze on both sides. Water marks.

PLPlayedPlayed

Creases and heavy wear, but whole and readable.

Flaws adding up to 24: creases, bends up to 2 cm, whitening all round, deep scratches, small water drops that didn't warp the card.

For example
A crease across a corner, whitening all round and haze on both sides: 8 + 8 + 8 = 24.
Never
Anything that makes a card Poor.

POPoorPoor

Damaged: tears, writing, water warping or missing pieces.

Anything beyond Played, and any damage.

For example
A card with a name written on the back, or one warped by water.
Never
Nothing: Poor is the floor. Photos must show exactly what's wrong.

3Always Poor

Whatever else the card looks like, it’s Poor with:

  • tears or holes
  • split or peeling layers
  • missing pieces
  • writing, stamps, stickers or paint that aren't from the manufacturer, unofficial signatures included
  • water damage that warped the card
  • sun fading
  • a curl of more than 5 mm
  • a bend that breaks the card

4Factory traits don’t count

Some things come with the card from the factory. They aren’t flaws:

  • print lines on the holo
  • rough or silvered edges from the cut
  • centring up to 70/30. Worse must be said in the listing and shown on photos of the front and the back
  • the texture of textured full arts and illustration rares

5How to check a card

063 mm88 mm2 mm · a white speck2 cm · a third ofthe short sideedge whitening8 cm · about the long sidelong whitening
  1. 1Start with the back: the dark blue border shows every white speck.
  2. 2Hold the card under a lamp and tilt it. Scratches and haze on the holo only show when they catch the light.
  3. 3Look along the card at eye level to spot bends and dents.
  4. 4Measure with the card itself: the short side is 63 mm, the long side 88 mm.
  5. 5Add up what you find: small 1, medium 2, large 4, very large 8. The total, the largest flaw and the kind of flaw decide the condition.
  6. 6In doubt? Pick the lower condition and show the flaw on the photos.

6What a listing needs

What you add depends on the card’s value: the higher of your asking price and its market price.

  • The condition check: you count what you see, and the count sets the best condition the card can be listed as, at any price. A claim is judged by this guide.
  • A 3D scan is made with the Pulls app on your phone while you slowly tilt the card. Buyers can turn the card in it. Corners are cut from the photo of the front.
  • Until the 3D scan is in the app, it’s optional at every price: your listing goes live with the front and back photos. Played and Poor cards never need a 3D scan. A card off-centre worse than 70/30 needs photos of the front and the back at any price. Say so in the condition check.
  • With a stock image, the condition is the seller’s statement.
  • In other currencies the steps are US$7.50, 15, 25, 50; £6, 12, 20, 40; C$11, 22, 37, 75; A$11, 22, 37, 75; ¥1,100, 2,200, 3,750, 7,500.
  • Trade-only listings need none of this. Whatever the price, a card with more or bigger flaws than its condition allows isn’t as described.
